dear aaron,
happy birthday! so far today has been pretty great, and with the party lasting all weekend long, i hope it continues to be awesome. each day nana says how much you look, think, and act like uncle conrad, and i can't help but agree! i have always loved him, but i always fought with him the most. now, it seems we are beginning our own roller coaster ride. as you become more independent each day (which you already were to begin with!), limits are pushed and tempers tested as we try to understand each other. you have the biggest heart of gold, and are very stubborn. i think you act out so much because of how big your feelings are! regardless of how evil you may think me for the day, we have yet to let a night end without at least a hug, and an i love you. you are so protective of ana, and so sweet to other kids in general (when you talk to them... you're incredibly shy around strangers), and you help me out throughout the day, every day. you make me so proud and so happy, little monkey. here are some things from this month:
- realizing you were going to have a birthday, you would tell everyone that you were 2, but turning 3 (fingers indicating numbers and all). you've been looking forward to this for a while, and yet when i told you this morning that you were 3, you told me you still wanted to be 2. that lasted for a whole minute till i told you to go look at the surprise on your bedroom door (a captain america poster).
- you love to dance with me! while i've been choreographing, you choreograph too. when i'm done, you learn what i've created, happily asking me, "what's next? can i do that that that...?" (failing for words you demonstrate what i was doing). you've got some moves of your own, especially running and slashing ones, though you still love spins :)
- a day does not go by where we skip reading. you love to read, and i would guess that our average reading time each day is about three hours, if you stuck it all together. one hour can easily go by, at least! having us read the same story several times in a row is something you enjoy, and i remind myself that that is one way you learn how to read, as we read pete the cat yet again... (ps, pete the cat stories are really cute!)
- you know how everyone always says, "why can't life actually be a musical, where people randomly burst into song?" well, YOU DO! you sing every week in nursery (at church), and throughout the week you sing the songs you've learned there, as well as the nursery rhyme ones that we sing, and superhero theme songs, and often a made-up tune that you sing to comfort ana when she's sad. suddenly hearing you sing as we walk down the stairs to the car, or as i'm doing dishes and you're in the living room, or while we're in the car.... it's adorable and i don't want you to ever stop!
- this month a movie called "the guardians of the galaxy" came out, and because daddy is slightly obsessed, we got the soundtrack to it... and have had so many dance parties already i've lost count! you LOVE the soundtrack, and dance around with ana "like you just don't care" (a favorite saying when getting cleaned up in the bathroom...)... your favorite song on the cd is "cherry bomb", or as you call it, "the hello daddy hello mommy wild girl song!" i'm still unsure why, but it's hilarious nonetheless.
- you don't like kisses a whole lot this month. but sometimes at night i can get away with giving you a quick kiss on the top of your head. most often the only way i get them is if you need a kiss to make an owie better. but as long as you still crawl into my lap while we read so we can snuggle, i'm ok. i just hope you always know a hug and a kiss are welcome and willingly given!
- you've begun writing alphabet letters on your own! your favorite is the letter H, followed by a lowercase R. you know how to spell your name, but you don't want to write it out yet. (having me write it out so you can spell it is an entirely different matter.) i'm so glad you love reading so much!
- you are going through a particularly nasty picky stage when it comes to food. not stressing about it lessens the severity, but when your grumpy attitude is the result of refusing to eat, it's frustrating not making my point across to you. we'll get there.
- through trial and error, we are figuring out together what to do when we butt heads. it is possibly the most exasperating thing i have ever done in my entire life. but i love you, so when we do figure out something that works (for at least that day!), it is immensely satisfying.
- you make the silliest faces when you feel like it, especially if it's while tickling or playing chase with ana. your eyes are incredibly expressive, and you have a goofy smile that i wouldn't change for anything!
when i have all the time and money in the world, i will make you wonderful superhero costumes. for now, i hope the hand-stitched pieces of simple cloth and your imagination take you on all your wild adventures. now as i know you'll remember bits and pieces of this home, i hope they are happy memories. mommy and daddy are trying to give you a wonderful life.... if anything, know we love you and are so grateful for everything you bring to this family.
love, mommy
