41 months

dear aaron,
i have so much in my heart when i think of you.  i think of how wonderfully sweet you are to your sister and your puppy, and how much of a little sidekick you are to daddy... i also think of the fits and tears that ensue because things don't go the way one or both of us wanted them to, and the snuggles that ultimately result from needing to know we still love each other.  i don't remember when i started yelling so much, but i know it's new.  i know that i despise that character flaw in myself.  i know i have been working very hard to stop doing it, but it is quite difficult when i feel overwhelmed.  remembering who you are and where you came from, and remembering that you just need to be held 9 times out of 10 is the best way to help me.  i know you are trying to make sense of this whole "thing we call life".  it's really not easy being three, and i get that.  it's not easy being the mom of said three year old, either, though.  i do know that i love you SO MUCH.  please know i am trying, i promise.  we'll figure this out together.
i think my favorite moment of the day is right before you go to sleep for your nap.  we've started reading the pooh stories again, and you just lay there so happy listening, and then fall asleep so content that we were able to share that.  i don't know what it is about those stories, but they really are just magical for us.  and pooh bear has such a big heart, it's always a happy ending.
i am going to actively start trying to make the day end happy by asking you what was the best moment of each day.  we'll stay up later than ana, and just snuggle as we talk.  i'll let you know next month how that is going.  it's really fun to see life through your eyes, and if not exactly fun, incredibly enlightening.  you are so sweet and close to the Lord, and i am so grateful for you.

- this past month was spent at nana and papa's.  it was great to see and talk to and play with aunts and uncles, and ride a bike, and just be with everyone.  you definitely missed being home, though, and when we got home just kept saying over and over again, "thank you mommy for bringing me home, i just love my home, it is so good to be home, i love my home, i missed my home."  i had never thought of having a stable home as such a big part of a child's life until that moment.
- daddy's papa passed away this past month.  this has to do with you in a small/big way because we went to the service to support miemie and daddy.  while we were in the car waiting for it to start (it was very cold and windy), you asked where daddy's papa was.  i don't like to lie or fool you so i can evade a difficult question, so i told you.  thankfully you had mittens from miemie for the occasion, so i used one of your mittens to explain how we all have spirits and bodies, and what birth, death and the resurrection do to our bodies.  i kept it very simple, focusing on our spirits and bodies coming together, leaving, and coming back together because of our Savior.  you had me repeat it about four or five times... and then your sweet, tender spirit overflowed with tears as you started to understand and felt all kinds of feelings, so i reiterated that after the resurrection we will all be together, forever, and you got this huge smile and wiped away the tears.  it was so sweet.  for a first time trying to explain and understand this abstract concept, i was relieved that you were satisfied with a simple answer and grateful that you were able to feel so deeply.
- you missed flint while we were away!  you have been playing with him and snuggling him so much this past week.  he has loved all your attention!
- as much as you missed flint, you had fun playing with rhodey and the birds!  you loved it when the one bird would just sit on the top of your head, and you loved throwing the ball for rhodey.  he was most definitely not allowed in our room though, haha!
- you anticipated christmas fully this year, and loved all the time we spent together, and of course presents, but also talking about the nativity.  you definitely can't keep a surprise a secret though!  if you knew what someone's present would be, you would tell them!  i've got to make sure to have good hiding places for the future ;)
- nana has a gingerbread book, and you had her read it over and over.  when we finally made a huge gingerbread man, you were so excited you literally jumped up and down and squealed with the pure joy of being able to eat him!  you then proceeded to eat all the gumdrops, and then only nibble the rest of him.... so silly!
- baths are not fun anymore.  once you are in them, they're fine (80% of the time).  but getting you there?  a huge chore.  showers are worse though.  but you don't like being dirty.  it's quite the dilemma.
- we learned that you like boiled eggs, a lot.  you ate two while peeling them with nana for egg salad.  no yolks though, just like daddy.  looks like mommy will be making these every now and then for you!
- you NEED a backyard, and i cannot wait to give you one.  you loved running around nana and papa's yard, playing chase or ball or just looking out into the reserve.  of course, running around the huge open house as opposed to our tiny apartment was good too!
- you still love to play pianos.  you would "practice" several times a week while at nana and papa's.
- you love exploring bookstores and libraries!  there is so much to read and see, and yet you like the comfort of what is familiar.  you appreciate detailed artwork, too, which makes my heart smile :)
- you still love to spin, a lot, frequently.  it's best when others join you, but even if we don't you still go for it!  who knew getting dizzy for 20 minutes could be so fun?

you love to laugh, especially when we have been having a serious discussion for too long of a time.  keep being silly, my little monkey pants.  you are going to do great things, this year and in the years to come.
love, mommy
