one month

dear reed,
how has it been one month already?  you are the sweetest little guy and we really can't get enough snuggles from you.

- you were born with a slight tongue-tie, which one of the nurses kept telling me to just have it cut, but the nice pediatrician (there were several over the course of our stay) told me the skin would stretch and to wait and see.  it has definitely stretched, so i'm not worried about you having difficulties with it.  the only thing is that you swallow more air while eating, so you have to be burped after every feeding.  this is unusual for me because your siblings didn't need this every single time.  you are definitely finding ways to be different from the others :)
- you sleep like a champ.  you sleep at night for 4 hours before needing to eat again.  you take a nap when the others do during the day (normally).  but you are awake for good periods during the day too, so it's just great.
- you still have the bluest eyes.  we'll see if you keep those bright baby blues with your adorable white hair.
- you do not enjoy bath time.  you tolerate it.  until i flip you over and hold you up so your tummy and feet are in the water, and you can watch the reflections and little waves, and then you are super content ha!
- after coming home from the hospital slightly jaundiced (again, the only one to do this), and getting plenty of extra sunlight, you are perfectly fine.  it is definitely weird not being able to let you be naked for a good part of the day, though, since it's been so cold.
- you fit the moses basket for about 2 weeks, and sleep pretty well in the cradle, as long as you are totally out when i put you in it.  but that's just because you would rather be held 24/7.  when you're not in the cradle, and i'm laying too far away from you, you will wiggle and inch until you are pressed up against me and snuggling.  it's adorable.
- you love evening daddy snuggles.  97% of the time, that's how you get to sleep at night.
- you managed to roll over once at a week and a half of age: you were on your tummy, furious i had set you down, with one arm under your chest.  in your anger, you were turning your head to yell at me, and straightened that arm simultaneously, thus flipping yourself over.  i know it was a fluke, but i have been oh-so-careful not to leave your arm under your chest since!
- you have the best old-man face when you're angry.  (wrinkly forehead.  it was more prominent earlier, but it's still pretty funny.)  and the best boo-boo lip when you're sad.  (right after you were born, you started to make this cute boo-boo lip face because you had yet to eat and were cold, it's one of my first memories of you, and tore at my heart.  all i wanted to do was kiss you better and make sure you could eat.)  so far the only smiles are when you're asleep.  but you keep your eyes WIDE open when awake, and often make this little turtle face as you make an "o" with your mouth.
- you took to pacifiers quite readily, sucking it out of nana's fingers that first week!  you still like trying to get your fingers though, and i don't normally have the pacifier on me.  the few times you've gotten straight fingers in your mouth, you've been quite content.
- one night that first week, you were sleeping and dreaming with your eyes open.  scared nana and i half to death it was so creepy.  i only had your daddy to thank for that.  thankfully you haven't done it since, ha!
- you don't hate being in the car seat.  you protest being set down, and buckled, but normally quiet down after a minute and go back to sleep.  you absolutely love being in the carrier, though, and will sleep instantly until you need to be fed again.  (i wear the carrier at church so i can still help the others and teach my class.)
- you love being outside (of course).  you snuggle into my chest and hold on tight with your little fingers, always holding on tight with those fingers.  you've grasped my collar bone more than once, it's hilarious.
- you have the longest fingers and toes!  one of the first things i noticed when you were born.
- you had already picked back up to your birth weight by day 4 of your life.  you've probably gained another pound, maybe two, since then.  you definitely eat!

your siblings love to hold, hug, and kiss you.  daddy and i just can't get enough.  we do try to hold you as much as possible.  you are the sweetest and cuddliest little guy - you fit right in :)  we are all so happy to have you in our family reed!
love, mommy
