4,7 and 2,9

dear aaron,
you are my fiercest and most sensitive kiddo.  everything you feel is HUGE.  when you are happy, oh man you are on top of the world!  and when you are angry, i am worried there will be a hole in my wall.  and when you are sad, i have to stop myself from crying with you because it is so hard to see that much pain.  every day is a roller coaster of emotion and boundary-pushing and learning about this big world.  daddy is gone for the week which is why this is foremost in my thoughts i guess, but it's pretty true 24/7.

- earlier this month you (as captain america) gave me (as captain marvel) a proper salute.  it was very random, and very adorable.  ahem, i mean, awesome.

- just last week you were talking about something that happened on your video game, and suddenly turned to me and exclaimed, "mom!  that was on the hoozle!"  whaaaaaat?  hilarious.

- when i woke you up to use the restroom, you were still half asleep as we went back to your room, and you said, "mom, you woke me up."  i replied, "yes, so you wouldn't wet the bed."  you answered, "well, i'm going back to bed now."  "sounds good, kiddo."  simple, made me chuckle because you were so out of it.

- every morning you come to say hi, and eagerly greet reed with a big smile, which he almost always reciprocates.  you have started to form a crazy bond with him this past month, where you hold him and play with him and talk to him, making him giggle and be silly with you.  i think you are loving the fact that he interacts more with you now!  you can't wait till he shares your room, and were disappointed when i told you he wouldn't be sharing your bed.  you two are going to be quite the duo, i can already tell!

- we had a wonderful afternoon earlier this month when the other two were taking early naps and you were still up and we played outside.  i was able to just focus on you, for about 2 hours.  i watched you be batman in a hulkbuster-like suit beating up mr. freeze and other bad guys.  you changed superheroes a few times.  all of this imagined.  on the trampoline, spinning in the grass, on the climber.  we ate some brunch together, just the two of us (i hadn't eaten breakfast yet, and you wanted some ha).  we talked about whether or not you wanted to go to school or stay home for school, and what each of those things would mean.  and you had my complete, undivided attention.  it was amazing.  and i despise that i can't do that more often.  we have minutes at a time normally.  i need to try harder i think to carve out a chunk of time like that, more frequently.  i hope you know how much it meant to me.  you are such a great kid, with such a great imagination, and such a big heart.

you are always helping me, always waiting for me to finish something else; and while daddy is definitely your favorite, in moments like that one above or when you smile just for me, i am reminded just how much you still need me...  i am so grateful for you.  you remind me constantly to slow down, re-prioritize my to-do list, and just snuggle.  you are understanding of the fact that i have to help the others.  but sometimes, even though you don't need my help, you still want it.  i'm so glad you still want the snuggles and the songs and the hugs.  you still want to talk and (when daddy is gone) to play.

i love you my darling boy.  you mean more to me than words can express.  still.
love, mommy

dear ana,
you are very much on the brink of your third birthday.  you are testing me every day, but also showing me all the delights of the simple things in life.  you're imagination is expanding, or at least becoming more known to me!  you are so giving.

- you call those furry things above the eyes "eyebrowns".  i'm laughing just writing that out... hahaha!

- we started using cloth diapers again, and 90% of naps you stay dry.  as for bedtime, i'm still trying to figure out when we need to wake you, other than every two hours (which i haven't done since we've been sick).  but i have hope that we will figure this out quickly, especially now that you will have pink and purple!

- milk and cheese, cheese and milk... and chocolate.  if you could have those all day, every day, you would be perfectly happy.  you also know i mean it when i say "you need to take a break!", and have told me more than once yourself  when you need a break.  except chocolate.  we never need a break from that :)

- you share your food.  food is a ritual for you, meant to be shared with others, all at the same time and together.  if aaron decides he is done, you are done too (whether or not you are full).  if i am eating after finally getting everything and everyone else taken care of in the morning, you want to share.  if we are on the phone with grandmas, you want to "sip" their drinks or share yours.  i just know when reed starts on solids you will be in heaven when i let you help him.

- you have taken to calling your little beanie baby pig your baby.  you carry it around with your blankie, putting it to sleep, sitting it in the highchair, putting it in the baby toys, feeding it... all like a baby.  it's pretty cute.

- the whining has been increased for some unknown reason.  i think my slacking in the quality one-on-one time is mostly to blame, because you are so happy when we have some good snuggles in.  i do know that the whining is a sure-fire way to set me on/over the edge.  unlike aaron, however, you understand when i say to try talking instead, i really can listen and help much more calmly.

- you are collecting all-things-princess now.  you have for a while, but mostly because everyone wanted to get you girl things.  now, however, you are choosing the princess things over the superheroes.  not to say that you don't still love superheroes (batgirl, wonder woman... you also like to be venom and growl and hiss...) but you are starting to play house, too, and ponies and princesses.  i think it's adorable to hear you and aaron playing house, and reinforcing rules and reality amidst imagination and pretend.

i think i almost have it figured out, how to balance everything, and then i realize how much you need more snuggle time.  i don't know if it will ever be enough, but even i am feeling it this month.  i think we need a girls' day soon.  just know that as much as i run around, i would rather be sitting with you.  i love you darling girl.
love, mommy
